Simply 7 Review and Giveaway

With two adults and five children in one house we go through a lot of snacks. Finding healthy choices that my kids will actually want to eat can be challenging. This is why I was very excited to learn about Simply 7 snacks. The company gets it's name from their idea of 7 principal standards.
They strive for quality products with ingredients you can pronounce. Their chips come in three different varieties each with their own special selection of flavors.
They are:
Hummus Chips, available in:
Sea Salt
Spicy Chili Pepper
Tomato Basil
Roasted Red Pepper

Lentil Chips, available in:
Sea Salt
Bruschetta
Creamy Dill (my personal favorite!)
Jalapeno (my husband's favorite)

Pomegranate Chips, available in:
Sea Salt
Black Pepper
White Cheddar

So what makes these chips so special? In my opinion, they taste amazing and are so different from any other product on the market today.
The texture is a little different at first, but the bold flavors quickly make you forget you are not eating a high fat fried chip.
The hummus chips are really special. I am a big fan of hummus as a snack. The hummus chips actually taste just like a crunchy, savory hummus!

Being able to give my children a snack made from ingredients that don't require a degree in biology to decipher is a blessing.
Simply 7 and The Pitch List have teamed up for a wonderful giveaway! You can win your very own variety box of chips! I can tell you this is a wonderful prize. It was a lot of fun for my family to help try out all the different flavors.

Damsel in Defense

Self protection is something that all of us should be aware of. The statistics are shocking and scary.

1) One in five women will be assaulted at some point in their life.
2) College age women are 4 x's more likely to be assaulted.
3) Every 35 seconds an aggravated assault occurs.

As a military wife there are quite often times I am home alone for months at a time. As a mother of five children this makes me extremely aware of the dangers out there. There are classes, videos, and now wonderful products geared specifically towards women. I was recently put in contact with a woman named Rosi Ray. She is an independent consultant for Damsel in Defense. Damsel in Defense is a company whose goal is to help women protect themselves. They offer several devices in a variety of colors. All are non-lethal. I had the opportunity to try out three of these products.

The first product is called Pack a Punch. This is a small stun gun. It plugs into the wall for easy charging and also has a flash light. With 7.5 million volts, this little gun is definitely effective. Another great feature is the wrist cord. When the wrist cord is plugged into the device it is "armed". If somehow the device is taken away from you, detaching the wrist cord renders the device useless. This is very important. This helps to ensure that the gun can not be then used on you. Very nice!

The next product is the Hardcore Pepper Spray. My two favorite features are the distance it will spray and the fact that it contains a UV dye. By having a long stream you are able to be further away from your attacker and still defend yourself. The UV dye is, in my opinion, ingenious and a necessity. What this does is basically "tags" the perp to be easily identified later. This is very convinving evidence and can definitely assist in the apprehension of the assailant.
My only criticism is that it is a little too easy to use. I would recommend that if you have small children in the home you make sure they never have access to this device.

Finally we come to the Sock it to me Kubotan. At first glance this is just a shiny, unassuming key chain. That is the beauty of this product. It is not a "dangerous" item, but it can be highly effective. It is a solid, heavy piece of metal with a dull tip and grooves on the side. What it does is inflict maximum damage and pain with very little, if any precision needed. This is a grab it and stab, hit, poke, whatever you are able to do.
I see no inherent danger in having this item in my home. Would I let my kid run around with it? No. Would I worry about my son picking up my keys with this on it? Absolutely not.

As with any self defense item a good bit of common sense is needed. Having something with you to help protect yourself could save your life. Every second counts.
These are just a few of the great products available on the Damsel in Defense website.

This is not only review, but also a giveaway!! How would you like to win a Hotlips stun gun, Pepper spray, and a Kubotan?(where allowed by law. If state law does not allow an item(s), a substitution will be made.

Ola Granola review and Giveaway

One of the greatest advantages to blogging is the opportunity to try out new products. Before I signed up for this review I had never heard of Ola! Granola. Oh boy was I missing out!. There are so many things to love about this product.
One of the first things about Ola! Granola that I love is the fact that it came from a family recipe. The founder, Dina Houser, grew up eating this granola and then made it for her own family. When people outside of the family tasted her product and loved it she made the decision to turn it into a business. This is a decision I for one am very glad she made.
Ola! Granola's ingredients list is all words you can pronounce. It is all natural, handbaked, and simply delicious. The granolas are also suitable for vegans and vegatarians.
Not only is the granola so tasty right out of the bag, but it can also be used as a topping or a wonderful addition to many recipes. It is very versatile. It can be used in savory as well as sweet dishes.
Ola! Granola is one of those easy decisions. It is a delicious product that I can give to my family without hesitation. It was very well received by all of my children, but especially by my 20 month old son John. He happily sat crunching away on handfuls of the granola.
I highly recommend this product. Not only is this a review, but it is also a giveaway! Ola! Granola is giving away 3 bags of Ola! Granola, samples, an Ola! Granola t-shirt, and an Ola! reusable tote. There will be 10 (ten) winners!! What a great prize package!!
Not only that but Ola! Granola has also given me a special code that gives you free shipping off of your order. I love free shipping!
Head over to the Ola! Granola site and check out their great products. Then use this code (SW2013) to get your order shipped free to you.
The entry form is below. Good luck!!

Playing with your food

Recently it has been suggested to me that I write about food. More specifically how to get children interested in making good food choices. I have 5 children. Four of my children are great eaters. Then there is Mr. Jackson. If it looks or smells "weird" forget it. He has always been a challenge. At three and a half years old he has many ideas of what he will not eat.
I started him out in much the same way that I had done with my three oldest children. James 16, Joey 13 (soon), and Sabrina 11. From the time they were babies I have had them in the kitchen with me. They were taught how to crack eggs, stir, and even measure. I have always felt it very important for any child to learn how to read a recipe.
My children were all taken grocery shopping with me as well. I taught them how to make the best choices no matter what the budget. I would also let them help plan out meals. This was a lot of fun for them. By allowing them to help choose what we bought, and then to help prepare it, this increased the odds of them actually eating the food.
While my husband was deployed our eating was able to be even more creative. My husband has never been what you would call an "adventurous" eater.
Each child would be responsible in deciding a portion of the meal and then helping to make it. Salads became a lot of fun. We came up with a great basic formula that allowed for a lot of diversity. I like to start with the baby spring greens. They are mild and very colorful. Then we would pick a cheese, a fruit, and a nut. All of this would be topped with a nice vinaigrette. One of our favorite compilations is baby greens, strawberries, sliced almonds, and feta.

It became obvious from a very early age that Jackson was going to be more of a challenge. He was eager to help pick food out and help cook, but tasting it was not happening. I had to try more options.
There are two that I would like to share now.
First: Salad bar
Again I start with the organic spring mix. I then allow the children to help pick out toppings. Some favorites are:
Hard boiled eggs
cucumbers
tomatoes
avocado
shredded cheese
diced ham
celery
carrots
black olives
artichoke hearts
green pepper
chick peas
radishes
green onion

I would cut up all of the toppings and set them out like a salad bar. The kids then got to make their own salad their way. This was a big hit! Even Jackson got into.

Another favorite is our fruit dessert. I would buy a variety of fruits. Berries, bananas, and melons seem to work the best. First I melt a bag of chocolate chips in the microwave. I do this by stirring about every 30 seconds. I also add a little peanut butter. This helps to keep the chocolate smooth and silky.
Then I did the white dip. I package cream cheese, 1 jar marshmallow fluff, and about a tsp. of vanilla. Mix this until smooth. The kids were given fondue forks and they went to town.!
As you can imagine there were not a lot of leftovers.
I am not usually a fan of gimmicks. I try to get my children to try foods in a variety of ways. It has been very helpful. When shopping on a budget it is nice to be able to just buy what ever is on sale, and to not get stuck buying the same old same old all of the time.
These are just a few ideas I wanted to share. I plan on trying many more and sharing those as well

Thanks for reading!!v
